(continuation of): Did That Really Cause This Much Pain  a light-hearted short story by V. Holland

     Well, that brings me to about where I am today, trying to figure out how my body can do me like this. How can my body generate so much pain over and over everyday for the last twelve years? It seems almost unbelievable that I’ve been in this kind of pain cycle for almost twelve years. The flareups are totally disabling. Can’t function. Can barely get through each breath let alone move around to go to the bathroom or do anything that a normal, mid-life, married father should be doing with his wonderfully supportive and loving family. Of course there’s the good side, after the flareups have subsided and the pain returns to a more manageable level where you can breath and you can sit up for a little while and talk to your wife and kids. Just don’t get overexcited and try to do to much as you can easily create a flareup and squash the good time you are in the middle of.

     On the good days it’s like a backache that makes you take some medicine and get off your feet looking for the ice pack and heat packs to begin alternating them to relieve the pain. Your appetite comes and goes and doing things with the family is a touchy subject. There are few windows of opportunity to work on maintaining the happy family and when one of those windows opens up you have to be ready to do all you can to create more windows. Exercise, meditate, rest, relax and read up on ways to ease the pains faster, quicker and at home without more medications should be at the top of your list of things to do.

     Once you’ve been hit by a Fibromyalgia, Sciatica, Arthritis or Back pain flareup, being a whimp isn’t really a choice you get to make.  Being curled up in the fetal position sucking your thumb waiting for whatever medicine you took, whichever heating pad you turned on or however much ice you packed on you to start to numb the pain while your brain is trying to deal with the fact that you just let everybody around you down because THEY ALL ARE COUNTING ON YOU BUT THE PAIN HAS STOPPED YOU IN YOUR TRACKS.  As if that isn’t enough your children don’t understand what you are going thru and you want to show them how strong you are but right now, if you had a diaper on, you’d probably be peeing in it.  Then there’s your significant other, lover or spouse or all one in the same and they are looking at you like, oh brother, here we go.  Are they hurting or they just don’t want to be bothered right now?  Can they really be hurting that bad?  And men, you know that there is this viscious rumor going around that men become big babies whenever the slightest thing is wrong with them and they need their wive’s to become their mommies for awhile and pamper them back to well being.  Who started that rumor anyway?  They need to have their tongue stapled to the roof of their mouth for a couple of hours….no, wait, they might just enjoy that pain more than expected. 

     People can’t see pain so they have a hard time understanding it.  From the outside, most chronic pain sufferers look “okay”.  We aren’t always twisted up or bent over or whatever folks might expect a chronic pain sufferer to look like.  Sometimes we can manage a smile or a laugh.  We often times push ourselves too far and end up in even more pain as we try to have some semblance of a life.  Believe this, if you find somebody is in pain and they are enduring the misfortune of being sidetracked/disabled by the pain, it’s no picnic and they didnt choose to be that way.  I would be even money that they would trade places with you to be pain-less or pain-free in a heartbeat.
