I’m still hyped from seeing “Greg”. Let me get in the shower and get ready for …..aaaaaah shit, that hurts. Honey! Honey! I can’t stand up straight. My back is locked up and the pain. Oh my GOD this hurts like hell honey. Call the doctor. I gotta get something for this pain. I can’t take it, it’s killing me. Aaah, oooo, eeee, unnnn. What did I do to myself doc? All I did was try to take off my shoes at three a.m. and my back just pinched me. I took some medicine and thought it would be better in the morning but when I went to get out of bed it hit me again like a ton of bricks. Why does it hurt so bad? How can my body do me like this?

"Did That Really Cause This Much Pain?" a light-hearted short story by V.Holland
The forties see us being “successful” with our great desk job in our great office overlooking that great golf course that we just can’t wait to get out on a play a few rounds. We spend a lot of time sitting on our keisters in our high back Italian leather chair that every mid level up and coming exec must have to cradle our fattening butts and tender lumbar regions. Then of course there’s our nice new or fairly new sports car with the hand-tooled seats and the flash and gleam to keep heads turning when we go thru the yellow light in a hurry to get nowhere in particular because it’s three a.m. and we already called our wife to tell her we’re on our way home after having a few drinks with our college classmate who decided it was time to pay us a visit. Wow, what an evening. I don’t remember the last time I drank and ate like that. I’ll have to hit the gym extra hard tomorrow to make up for it but it was worth it seeing old “Greg” again. Boy, it was great seeing “Greg” but he looked kinda old for forty-five. I dont’ look like that do I? Nah, I’m in shape. I workout and I feel fine, ah, unh, enh, just let me bend over here to get off my shoes….aaa eeee ouch…my back. What the devil? Where’s my Aleve? I gotta get this pain to stop so I can get to work in the morning. It’s three a.m. I got about four hours sleep. Maybe I’ll see how I feel when my alarm goes off and I might call in and go in a few hours later today since I don’t have any appointments.
So, welcome to the mid-forties. Your first sign that your body is coming around to collect for all of those years of dashing and dancing, spinning and winning. What? You thought you were going to be special and YOUR body wasn’t going to let you down and start to have some breakdowns. Get a grip because reality is that sooner or later we all have to pay the piper. Some more than others but we all have to pay. Maybe old “Greg” didn’t look so old after all. Maybe it was the lighting in the place or the number of beers. Maybe this back pain isn’t really a pain I’m just thinking it’s a pain since it is three a.m. and I’m really tired from the last four holes of golf I finished today after work.
What is that noise? Oh, my alarm clock. It’s time to get up already? Wow,
Sometimes I feel like I just ran 5 miles at top speed and can’t hardly go another moment. The pains are so intense that your thinking becomes cloudy at times and you get frustrated from the daily grind and the things you can’t do anymore that you took for granted being able to do. The frustration can lead to depression so I work hard to keep my websites up to date.
Chronic pain can make us feel isolated and helpless, especially if its cause is an illness or physical condition for which there's no cure or effective medical treatment. At times of deepest despair, finding ways to nurture our spirits can help us not only cope with the pain, but also discover nuggets of grace, comfort, and productivity that can move us through and beyond the helplessness and hopelessness we feel.
